The XM177 series is a shortened version of the M16 assault rifle, which was adopted in limited quantities by the US military in the 1960s. It was prepared for special forces, signalmen, and aircrews who found the long M16 inconvenient in the jungle warfare of Vietnam.
It features a muzzle device with a suppressor structure called a moderator, which is equipped to suppress the increased firing sound and flame caused by the short barrel, and a retractable aluminum stock that is similar to the current M4 series.
The M653 is also a shortened version of the M16, but is equipped with a 14.5-inch barrel that can be fitted with an M16 bayonet.
