Description

The AH-64D Apache Longbow is an advanced version of the AH-64A Apache, an all-weather attack helicopter developed and adopted in line with the US Army's Advanced Attack Helicopter (AAH) program. The radar-equipped version was called the AH-64D Apache Longbow, and the radar-free version was called the AH-64C. At the end of 1993, the AH-64C designation was abolished, and the helicopter came to be called the AH-64D Apache Longbow, regardless of whether it was equipped with radar or not.

The most distinctive feature of the onboard sensors is the Fire Control Radar (FCR), also known as the Longbow Radar, which is attached to the top of the main rotor mast. It detects, identifies, and automatically selects targets for attack, and is a new generation attack helicopter with excellent control capabilities during combat due to its integrated system management. The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force has decided to introduce the AH-64D Apache Longbow as the successor to the AH-1S.

The first AH-64D for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force made its first flight on December 15, 2004 in Mesa, Arizona, USA. After undergoing various tests for a year, it was delivered to Fuji Heavy Industries in Utsunomiya on December 18, 2005 and reassembled. At this time, it was also equipped with specifications for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. The first and second AH-64Ds for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force were manufactured by Boeing in the USA, but Fuji Heavy Industries plans to license-produce about half of the subsequent aircraft. On March 16, 2006, the first AH-64D was ferried to the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force's Akeno Camp.

Various tests and inspections will be conducted at Akeno in the future, and it will proceed to deployment in combat. *Information from the time of release in March 2009.
